Managing Holiday Overwhelm: Tips for Staying Calm Together

The holiday season can bring excitement, but it can also be overstimulating.

When routines disappear, sensory overload can lead to big emotions.

Here are some grounding techniques for you and your child to stay calm.

1. Deep Breathing

Encourage your child to join you in slow, deep breaths, focusing on the inhale and exhale.

Breathing helps regulate the nervous system, easing stress and helping both of you feel centered.

2. 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Exercise

Shift focus from overwhelming emotions by identifying five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste.

This sensory check-in helps bring you both back to the present moment.

3. Create a Quiet Corner

Set up a designated “quiet space” with soft blankets, pillows, and possibly noise-canceling headphones.

This can serve as a retreat for your child to unwind when things feel too intense.

Tip: Incorporate these grounding techniques into daily routines to maintain calm during busy holiday times.
